More than 6,000 years ago, among the magnificent snow-covered peaks, deep lakes and high, limitless steppes of the Andes Mountains, Peru’s first inhabitants managed to domesticate Alpacas and Llamas. The finest fibers carefully hand selected from the shearing of choice Alpacas were particularly coveted by Inca Aristocracy and the European Nobility that would later follow into the New World.
Alpaca fiber's unique hollow core gives it a special lightweight textural luster that breathes exceptionally well while providing gentle warmth.
Three quarters of the world’s Alpacas and the genetic reserve of the species are to be found in Peru where selective breeding continues to raise the health of the animals and the quality of their fleece.
At Misericordia, we create timeless knitwear for Women and Men who seek quality, strive for perfection and never settle. Fusing tradition, culture, and modernity each piece has a modern yet relaxed style. To create a sustainable luxury product, you have to start at the source. Here is our story.
Peruvians have been wearing knits made of alpaca fiber for centuries. Ancient Incas referred to alpacas as the ‘Fiber of the Gods’ because of the luxuriously soft and durable fibre they produce.
Alpacas are the most plentiful of the four South American camelids. With over 3.5 million animals in Peru (about 80% of the world’s total), they provide income for thousands of Andean families. The fiber is known for outstanding thermal insulation, wrinkle resistance, low pilling, high water absorption and a remarkable softness.
During the 1st World War, Alpaca was rediscovered by some unknown person who caused the creation of suits of Alpaca to be worn by aviators under their leather garments. These airmen blessed the warmth of Alpaca.
With the end of World War II, efforts were made to vertically integrate the Peruvian alpaca industry. The first successful company to do this was Michell. Founded by an Englishman, Frank Michell, the company imported its first equipment in November of 1946, and by June of 1947 was putting together Peru's first alpaca textile mill. Today, Misericordia is buying his alpaca to the Michell Group in Peru.
Unlike clothing of the previous century, knitted goods began to emerge, post war. Previously, knitted clothing was made by hand, now machines knitted for us, and the growth of a knitwear industry began. During the 70’s, as a natural textile, alpaca was relegated to the homespun natural hippie culture, or brought home from back-packing trips to South America.
But now, Misericordia is working to spread their soft secret to the high-fashion world. The magic of Misericordia lies in the combination of our design and Peru’s extraordinary fibers and textile craftmenship. Misericordia’s knitwear is produced in our own knitting factory in San Miguel District, in Lima - Peru. We believe that in today’s world of fast fashion and mass consumption, people are looking for authentic products with a soul.
