Much like coffee, cashmere or wine, the quality of cotton varies greatly. Thanks to ideal growing conditions, extra-long staple length and hand harvesting, Peruvian pima cotton is the world’s finest, prized for its exceptional durability, softness and brilliant luster.
The contrast of the white, fluffy Cotton bolls against the background of the arid coast has formed part of the Peruvian landscape for over 5000 years. Peru has a millennial tradition of growing and perfecting Cotton, which goes back to the pre-Inca cultures. Peruvian Pima Cotton (gossypium barbadense) is today considered to be one of the softest and finest Cottons in existence. This precious commodity is grown on the fertile soil of the Piura and Chira valleys in northern Peru.
The fiber’s extraordinary length and fineness, is what makes Peruvian Pima Cotton softer, smoother and stronger than other Cotton fibers. It is carefully handpicked in order to avoid the impurities that industrial harvesting leaves and foregoes the use of defoliant agents.
Clothes define people. A person's clothing is an essential key to his or her culture, class, personality, or even religion. Misericordia recognizes the importance of understanding clothing sociologically, historically, and artistically.
At Misericordia, we don’t forget that Cotton is a political material with dramatic slaves stories all around the world during history. Remember what Malcolm X said : « It's got to be the ballot or the bullet. The ballot or the bullet. If you're afraid to use an expression like that, you should get back in the cotton patch, you should get back in the alley. »
And Jimi Hendrix said : « I wish they'd had electric guitars in cotton fields back in the good old days. A whole lot of things would've been straightened out. »
