Lygia Pape (1927-2004) was a leading Brazilian artist whose work brought together formal rigour and daring experimentation.

Pape was a founding member of the Neo-Concrete movement, which was dedicated to the inclusion of art into everyday life. Pape’s early work developed out of an interest in European abstraction, however she and her contemporaries went beyond simply adopting an international style, and started to draw on their own local situation.

Neo-Concretism is often seen as the beginning of contemporary art in Brazil, and Pape’s work – which focused on the coming together of aesthetic, ethical and political ideas – has formed an important part of Brazil’s artistic identity.

The Serpentine Gallery in London presents until February 19th 2012 work from throughout Pape’s career, including early drawings and poems from her Concrete period to her Neo-Concretist Livros (Books) and Caixas (Boxes) series, as well as ballets and performances such as Divisor (Divider) and O ovo (The Egg). Many of these works were created in response to the political repression growing in the late 1960s and reflected the artist’s strongly critical views on Brazil’s elite. Pape’s late works focused on the depiction of emotion and sensation, and have been described by Hélio Oiticica – a contemporary of Pape’s – as ‘permanently open seeds’.

Her approach can also be explained in her own words: “my concern is always invention. I always want to invent a new language that’s different for me and for others, too… I want to discover new things because, to me, art is a way of knowing the world…to see how the world is…of getting to know the world’.

Of all of Pape’s works, the most renowned ones, those that best resume her artistic process, are probably “As TtÈis”, the first of which was conceived in 1979. “As TtÈias” are installations constructed by the geometric disposition of golden threads in space. They outline volumes, but they also draw lines that are almost invisible. “As TtÈias” have a strong impact by the discrete fineness of their disposition and the ways in which they reflect light in varying fashion depending on the spectator’s position.

Born in 1929 from Russian immigrants parents, Jodorowsky is raised in Chile until he is 24. It is after a stay in France that the artist decides to devote himself to theater and filmmaking.

Are you familiar with divination? If yes, you might know this Parisian coffee where Alejandro Jodorowsky comes regularly.
The Chilean, French resident, is often solicited for his knowledge in taromancy.

Before having a consultation, let’s come back on his movie, El Topo, that opens the doors of his singular universe.
In December 1970 his third movie is released: El Topo. The film has been described as a “metaphysical western” or an “acid western” in reference to the testimony it brings to the libertarian aspiration of the beginning of the 70’s.
By the way, one of the principal supporters of the movie was John Lennon himself, who has been involved in the production of an other Jodorowsky’s realization.

This movie tells the story of the journey of El Topo, a dark horse rider in the desert accompanied by his son. El Topo, played by Jodorowsky himself, is a violent, cold and confident character.
This mysterious man is going through scenes of courage and cruelty then it falls down to better reborn from his encounter with the banned of our world.

An anthology of symbols and moral issues are proposed and remained in suspense in order to better let the spectator have its own free interpretation.

Produced in Mexico and filmed in Spanish, the odyssey from El Topo leads us through the mexicans deserts, the region of Monterrey and the surrounding of Mexico.
If the myth of the western is typically North American, the baroque aspect and the omnipresence of the religious symbols are here definitively linked to the Mexican culture.

El Topo instantly arouses the curiosity and the search for a message through the adventures of this man in black. It is also a large visual delirium which will delight an audience in search of a free and creative cinema.

We present to you today two movies that come to acknowledge (if it has still to be done) the importance of football in this region of the world and of the quality of the Latin-American cinema.

Rudo Y Cursi from Carlos Cuaron

In this movie from 2008, we found again the two Mexicans actors that had made the charm of the movie Y Tu Mamá También : Diego Luna et Gael García Bernal.

The duo is the main reason of the success for this movie that oscillates between the drama and the comedy.
The action leads us into the meanders of the Mexican soccer and invite us to understand the social part that the latter play in a remote province through our two protagonists: Tato also called Rudo (“the tough”), and Beto (“the soft”), two brothers stars of their local team.

Soon noticed by a recruiter coming from Mexico City in search of new talents, the two provincials head town and encounter a rapid sportive succes and the social ascension that comes along.
Rudo y Cursi plays on the contrasts and contradictions of a Mexican society that is at the same time comic and pathetic.
Innocents and naives, they believe in the Mexican dream: fortune, women and celebrity. And to them, only football can lead them so far.
It is with obvious affection and attention that we look at these two accomplices that are not prepared enough to integrate a world that will have no mercy with them.

The movie is not exempt of clichés, but they are compensated by a frenetic rhythm due to short and incisive dialogues and a camera that keep going in movement.

Rudo y Cursi resume the illusions and disillusions of a youth that lives for football, which in numerous countries reminds a privileged way of social ascensions but also for which the elected are few.

El Camino de San Diego from Carlos Sorin

The Argentine director of the movie, Carlos Sorin, is one of the greatest Latin American filmmaker of these past years.
As a fan of football, he could not avoid talking once in his carrier of the most famous Argentine, his compadre Diego Maradona.
El Camino de San Diego celebrates the culture of football and shows that it can unite individuals that everything oppose in the day-to-day life.

With great humor and sensibility, Sorìn underlines the fact the human values contained in every individual are importants: the goodness, the tolerance will triumph over all obstacles, be they social, cultural, economic or religious.

Tati, our hero, lives in the North of Argentina, close the Great Forest. Comes a day when after discovering a strain which to him symbolizes Diego Maradona, he decides to go on a journey to deliver his find to the Argentine soccer idol.

With this movie, Carlos Sorìn also explains to which extent the differences of cultures can be strong between the populations across Argentina. In the meantime, the director highlights, not without humor, the fact that a sport such as football can act as a binder that overcomes cultural differences and bring people together during the time of a trip through Argentina.

Before you go play your very first football game on the Altiplano or you attend a game of the Copa America, do not hesitate to watch these two films that allow to better understand both the cinema in Latin America and the fervor that surrounds football.

Werner Herzog, German film director, falls in love with a passion for the Amazon and is armed with a steadfast determination to make his films there. His obstinacy and excess of its projects lead to conflicts of production and filming Homeric stories. No matter how! Herzog succeeds and gives life to two major films: Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982).

Apocalypse Aguirre!

Better to tell it right away, you can get bored watching Aguirre, the Wrath of God. I think the intent is to communicate the feeling of stress and the length of the journey of a conquistador’s group in full rainforest during the sixteenth century.

Werner Herzog

Aguirre, played by actor Klaus Kinski, is a lieutenant completely megalomaniac. He believes he can find the legendary Eldorado, city of gold . Without thinking the way home, he took command of an expedition badly equipped to cross through endless Amazon jungle and river.

This improbable odyssey seems surreal and makes us gradually lose all sense of time and space. Hypnotized, lost, I felt like Aguirre to be taken with hallucinations when appears a boat hanging in the top of a tree in the forest.

For comparison, I imagine Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola owes a lot to Aguirre, the Wrath of God. It is particularly interesting to make this comparison when we know that the filming of these movies was just as epic as their subject. Herzog in the forest had to fight against humidity, the dangers and madness crisis of his uncontrollable actor Klaus Kinski.

That was not enough?

1982, ten years after the shooting of Aguirre and the Wrath of God, Herzog uses the same team, the same crazy actor and turn Fitzcarraldo in the Peruvian Amazon. The film develop as well, the story of a megalomaniac man full of projects in an environment that he cannot control.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God

That man is Brian Fitzgerald. He seeks to make fortune and start an expedition on a steamer boat towards a promising area tree of the Amazon rainforest. The central moment of the film is when this madman decides to move the boat over a hill to reach another river. What should be done by models and special effects was abandoned, and Herzog, by genius or madness, decides in the middle of Amazon rainforest to actually get the boat over the hill.

Fitzcarraldo is an incredible movie about madness and human ambition. There are only few movies as demanding and ambitious as this one morever shot in such conditions.

An Herzog Experience!

As part of his films, I imagine Herzog in constant battle with Amazon to succeed his plans. Like the characters he portrays, he is a man seeking his place in a space dominated by a hostile nature.

This is certainly the position of human subordinated by the nature that Herzog has come to seek in the Amazon. The european fantasy of the virgin forest was transformed into concrete experience of cinema in South America.

Finally, the real hero of Herzog’s films, is Herzog himself.

Y Tu Mama También - Alfonso Cuarón

Today powered on major international productions (Harry Potter 3, The son of man), Alfonso Cuaron is also the director of a cult film for a Mexican generation:

Y tu Mama También ! was released in Mexico in 2001. A provocative and insolant road trip movie about the Mexican golden youth overpassing all taboos and talking about sex, friendship and ephemeral love .

Tenoch and Julio just left their girlfriends who went in Europe to study. The two young Mexicans who have boring time meet Ana, the wife of Tenoch’s cousin. Against all odds Ana accepts their random proposal trip to an imaginary beach “La Boca del Cielo”.

Discussing about this film with Karla, a friend from Mexico, she draws my attention to a particular point: “In this film, the character of Tenoch comes from a wealthy family, while Julio is more modest” . She adds, “I like the idea that the two are best friends as they are aware of this difference without talking about it openly.” Differences in wealth are indeed a very violent contentious issue in Mexico. But here comes the character of Ana which is the disruptive element. The friendship of two young people will be tested with issues of love, sex, pride, but will never enter in the conflict of their social difference.

The realism of the friendship between Tenoch and Julio seems to me essential to the success of this movie. Humour, jokes and special expressions of young Mexican give a rapid aspect of the film’s generation. Carlos Demian, a friend of Mexico explains me the enthusiasm of young people for this film: “It’s a film that breaks with what is usually seen in the Mexican cinema. There are no taboo, it’s a film very liberal for Mexico.” When it was released the public was fascinated by the story without any censorship and moral filter. Consequence of its success with young people: the film quickly became a cult movie!

For us Europeans, a few expressions will escape but Alfonso Cuaron does not fail, with road trip format, to give us an overview of the social situation of the Mexican provinces through the film. In addition, it is an opportunity to discover or rediscover the excellent Gael Garcia Bernal, who following this success will soon become the international star that we know today.

The work of the artist, born in Paris in 1980 focuses on the traces left by the man in his environment and history, through the passage of the time.

Through sculpture, painting, etching, photography, video and performance, Cyprien Gaillard follows particularly the French philosopher Denis Diderot’s advice according to which “One must ruin a palace to make it an object of interest”.
Just like the 18th century French painter Hubert Robert did when he painted the Louvre as an imaginary ruin, in the “Vue imaginaire de la galerie du Louvre en ruine”:

From this perspective he transfered 72 000 bottles of beer from Turkey to Germany. The cardboard boxes filled with bottles form the even steps of the pyramid called “The Recovery of Discovery”. By using the monument – by climbing the sculpture and drinking the beer – its destruction is already initiated.

Cyprien GAILLARD explores issues such as urbanism, vandalism and the decay of modernists utopias, GAILLARD’s ruined architectures and disappearing landscapes, like the video “Pruitt Igoe Falls” (2009):

Or the serie of the Cairns (since 2007), a series of photographs that depict the aftermath of the demolition of high rise social housing in Glasgow and the Parisian suburbs, shot and printed after Düsseldorf school of photograph’s codes and photographers – monumentality, frontality, absence of narration and time reference –, but instead of picturing an arrogant modernist building, only remains a pyramid of ruins.

Or moreover the permanent installation of “La grande allée du Château de Oiron “, which he had dozens of tons of crushed rubble from a demolished tower block of Issy-les-Moulineaux dumped on the main alley of the Renaissance castle of Oiron (West of France). The artist’s intervention takes visitors to “step on the ruins of modernist utopies to access a piece of heritage” :

Parallel to this project of gathering occurrences of worldwide entropy, Gaillard has started to create his own ‘parc aux ruines’, with monuments scattered across the world like a monumental bronze sculpture of a duck taken from a derelict Modernist neighbourhood of Beaugrenelle in Paris (XVe). This duck born a second time in the work of Cyprien Gaillard.
