Paul Gauguin

How could we know that Paul Gauguin, one of the most famous French painters, leader of the Pont Aven’s School and the inspiration of the Nabis, major artist of the XIX century was connected to Peru!
Indeed, the painter, born in 1848, spent his childhood in Lima where his father wanted to make a fortune. But the most incredible come from his mother’s side. His mother, Aline Chazal, daughter of Flora Tristan who is, according to some authors, the granddaughter of Simon Bolivar, important personality of the independent’s fight of South America. His mother come from Spanish squires, and from the legend as well from a Peruvian vice king!
His painting were inspired from his numerous trip around the world and tell us his story, France, Holland, Denmark, Caribbean’s, Polynesia…where he died in 1903.

Comment se douter que Paul Gauguin, l’un des peintres Français les plus célèbres, chef de file de l’Ecole de Pont Aven et inspirateur des Nabis, artiste majeur du XIX siècle était lié au Pérou !
Effectivement, le peintre, né en 1848, a passé son enfance à Lima où son père y pensait faire fortune. Mais le plus étonnant provient de son coté maternelle. Sa mère, Aline Chazal, fille de Flora Tristan serait donc selon certains auteurs, la petite fille de Simon Bolivar, grande figure du combat pour l’indépendance du continent Latino-Americain. Aline Chazal descendrait donc de propriétaires terriens espagnols, il se pourrait même selon la légende, d’un vice roi du Pérou. Ses peintures sont inspirées de ses nombreux voyages et reflètent son histoire, France, Pays-Bas, Danemark, Caraïbes, Polynésie…où il mourra en 1903.

The Ballestas Islands

These islands are located in some km by boat of the port of Paracas. There is a colony of sea birds, lions of sea, penguins and even whales! Friends of the Nature, you will get it! It goes without saying that many birds means… a lot of guano (excrement of birds)! The heap of guano can sometimes reaches 50 meters in thickness. Known for its fertilizing qualities, during the middle of the XIXth century, the guano was the first product of export of Peru. The destination was Europe and North America. This business was such as lucrative as Spaniards wanted to take possession of these islands. «The war of Guano » was declared! Since the massive use of chemical fertilizers, birds got back in peace and serenity. Nowadays they are only disturbed by tourists’ boats and the two habitants of the islands who take care of their comfort and security as well as the extraction of the guano, every four years.

Ces îles, situées à quelques km en bateau du port de Paracas, abritent une colonie d’oiseaux marins, de lions de mer, de pingouins et même de baleines. Amis de la Nature, vous l’aurez surement compris, qui dit beaucoup d’oiseaux dit beaucoup de …guano (déjections d’oiseaux). L’amas de fiente peut atteindre à certains endroits 50 mètres d’épaisseur. Connu pour ses qualités fertilisantes, au milieu du XIXème siècle, le guano fût le premier produit d’exportation du Pérou en destination de l’Europe et de l’Amérique du Nord. Ce commerce était si lucratif que l’Espagne désira s’emparer de ces îles. Fût alors déclarée « la guerre du guano ». Mais, depuis l’utilisation massive des engrais chimiques…les oiseaux ont aujourd’hui retrouvé le calme et la sérénité qui règne sur le site. Ils ne sont guère plus dérangés que par les bateaux de touristes et les deux habitants des îles, en chargent de leur confort et sécurité ainsi que l’extraction du guano, tous les quatre ans.

The Wari culture in the Quai Branly Museum!

Discovered in 2007 in the graves of the peninsula of Paracas (around 250Km from Lima on the Peruvian coast) these incredible pieces of the pre-Inca culture, the Wari-Kayan are honored in the Quai Branly Museum of Paris in 2008. The temporary exhibition shows wonderful tissue of a rare quality. Indeed the Museum shows civilization’s art from America, Asia, Oceania and Africa. This exhibition is also the beginning of a cooperation between the French Museum and the National Anthropology and History Museum of Peru in Lima in order to restore Peruvian and world’s patrimony elements.

Découvertes en 1927 dans les tombes de la péninsule de Paracas (sur la côte péruvienne, à environ 250 Km de Lima) ces pièces fabuleuses de la culture pré-Inca Wari-Kayan sont à l’honneur au Musée du Quai Branly de Paris en 2008. Cette exposition temporaire présente des tissus de dimensions impressionnantes et d’une qualité rare. Rappelons que ce musée présente les différents arts des civilisations des Amériques, d’Asie, d’Océanie et d’Afrique. D’une pierre deux coups, une coopération entre le Musée du Quai Branly et le Musée National d’ Arquéologie, d’Anthropologie et d’Histoire du Pérou (Lima) est mise en place pour la restauration d’éléments du patrimoine péruvien et mondial.

Callao, a small human’s step, but a big step for the Independence!

Callao is not only the biggest port of Peru, this region also shelters the famous fortress of San Felipe located in the district of the Punta. Built in 1747 by the Spaniards to protect the coast, it is at this place that they took refuge and finally capitulated in 1821. Thus, the Independence of Peru was proclaimed on July 28th, 1821. Since that date, each year, it is celebrated the Independence Day. Colours of Peru are all over the streets with flags which follow the wind and rhythm the day!

Callao n’est pas seulement le plus grand port du Pérou, cette région abrite également le célèbre fort de San Felipe situé dans le district de la Punta. Edifié en 1747 par les Espagnols pour protéger la côte, c’est ici même qu’ils se retranchèrent et finalement capitulèrent en 1821. L’Indépendance du Pérou fut donc proclamée le 28 Juillet 1821. Chaque année, à cette date, est célébrée la fête nationale de la patrie. Les couleurs du Pérou envahissent alors les rues avec les drapeaux qui dans le vent rythment la journée ! Pas étonnant cette profusion de drapeaux car attention aux rêveurs qui oublieraient de le mettre sur leur maison… une petite amende les attend !

The Potato or “Papa”

The famous potato! Fried, boiled, in gratin, garnished with truffles, the papa rellena, the papa huancaïna… the potato is for sure the first ingredient of our societies.

But did you know that it came from Peru? The story of the papa has begun about 8000 years at 3800 meters en high, in the region of the Lake Titicaca. Nowadays there are about 3000 various sorts of potatoes and Peruvians eat 80kg of papa per year and per capita! You will find this ingredient in all your plate!

And about Mr. Parmentier? This famous French man did not invent the potato…but while French fed theirs pigs with potatoes, Sr Parmentier made French aware of the edibility of potatoes. This discovery was very useful to fight against the starvation.

The United Nations Organisation has declared 2008 the year of the potato « to strengthen the awareness of the key role of the potato, and the agriculture. »

La pomme de terre, la patate, la papa…en frite, en purée, en robe des champs, en
gratin, perlée de caviar, au truffes, la papa rellena, la papa à la huancaïna… est bien l’aliment de base de nos sociétés.
Mais saviez-vous que cet aliment est originaire du Pérou ? L’histoire de la « papa » a en effet débuté il ya environ 8000 ans à plus de 3800 mètres d’altitude aux alentours du Lac Titicaca ! Le Pérou recense aujourd’hui plus de 3000 espèces de pommes de terre. Ses habitants en consomment près de 80Kg par an ! Vous retrouverez cet ingrédient chargé d’histoire dans toutes les assiettes péruviennes !
Et Monsieur Parmentier dans tout ça ? Au risque de décevoir certains, cet illustre personnage n’a pas inventé la pomme de terre…Il a néanmoins prouvé sa comestibilité aux français qui dédiaient cette denrée aux cochons. Cette fabuleuse découverte permis de lutter efficacement contre la famine.
L’Organisation des Nations Unies a déclaré 2008, année de la pomme de terre afin de « renforcer la prise de conscience du rôle clé de la pomme de terre, et de l’agriculture en général.»

Edwin, one of Misericordia’s cutters, is wearing a jacket called Los Maestros, a beautiful jacket which we created in the Gamarra workshop.

On the white board, a glimpse of Misericordia’s secret plans. This top-secret document gives confectioning indications, and demonstrates both the level of professionalism and rigour within the workshop. Please note, to the right of the board, Aurelyen’s brilliant sketch, a document which is today being preciously conserved in our archives.
Sur le tableau, on aperçoit une petite partie des plans secrets de Misericordia. Ce document top-secret représente des indications de confection, et démontre tout le professionnalisme et la rigueur dégagés par l’atelier. Veuillez noter, à droite du tableau, le magnifique dessin d’Aurelyen, aujourd’hui précieusement conservé aux archives.

Here we can see Misericordia’s only computer in the Gamarra workshop. All the administration was donne on this small desk, and to the left, we can see the area where we deposited all our clients’ cases, and where we prepared all the orders. At the beginning of our adventure, we had an exclusive partnership with DHL, but little by little, we cut our ties with this often expensive and at times unreliable partner.
Ici on peut voir l’unique ordinateur de Misericordia à l’atelier de Gamarra. Ici sur ce petit bureau se faisait l’ensemble de l’administration, et on peut voir, à gauche, l’endroit où on déposait tout les cartons pour les clients, et où on préparait toutes les commandes. Au début de l’aventure, Misericordia travaillait de manière quasiment exclusive avec DHL. Mais on a abandonné au fur et à mesure ce partenaire pas toujours fiable et souvent très chère.

The pieces on the table were cut for a jacket called Joker. On this picture, we can only see the pieces for one of the sides of this jacket. We can then understand why this jacket is composed of fifty pieces, giving the sewers complexe and sophisticated assembly work. For the creation of this jacket, all the seperate pieces were put on a table, and each worker would come to collect them, piece by piece, to assmble them and construct the jacket bit by bit.
Les pièces sur la table ont été coupées pour une veste s’appelant Joker. On voit ici seulement un des côtés de la Joker. On comprend donc pourquoi cette veste est composée de plus de cinquante pièces, donnant aux couturiers un travail d’assemblage complexe et sophistiqué. Pour la confection de cette veste, l’ensemble des pièces étaient posées sur une table, et chaque ouvrier venait les prendre, une par une, pour les assembler et construire la veste au fur et à mesure.

On the cases above, we can see some of Misericordia’s biggest clients, such as Citadium in Paris, and United Arrows and Baycrews in Japan. All the confections for their orders were completed in this tiny workshop in the centre of Lima.
Sur les caisses ci-dessus, on voit une partie des très grands clients Misericordia, comme le Citadium à Paris, et United Arrows et Baycrews au Japon. Toutes les confections pour leurs commandes ont été faites dans ce minuscule atelier au centre de Lima.
