ART – Francis Alÿs through Fabiola
The MALI (Art Museum of Lima) organized an exhibition of one of our favorite artists: Francis Alÿs – through a cult of Fabiola.
“With this exhibition, MALI seeks to show one of the most unique works in the world of Alÿs, where the artist works not only as creator but also as a collector of objects produced by others. This veneration of an unknown or anonymous work is consistent with his practice as an artist, who has frequently resorted to collaboration with various craftsmen and scribes. By positioning the work of amateur craftsman and the copy in the museum , Alÿs questions the criteria of originality, uniqueness and authorship that still dominate our conception of art, “says Tatiana Cuevas, curator of contemporary art in MALI.
Holy Fabiola, patron saint of nurses and battered women, is perhaps the only Holy divorced. When Francis Alÿs decided to collect reproductions of popular paintings by masters, it is his portrait by Jean-Jacques Henner (the last of the Romantics) that gradually forced upon him, more than the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper. No doubt the frequency of these reproductions, but also because of a charge mythical as that of the saint of the original disappeared.
He studied engineering and architecture at the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture Saint-Luc, in Tournai, Belgium, and holds a Master of Urban Planning at the Instituto Universitario di Architettura Venicia, Italy. Since late 1980, he lives and works in Mexico City where he made his first solo exhibition in 1990. His work consists of an eclectic repertoire between painting, drawing, photography, film and performance, had been presented, among others, at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City (1997), Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Hartford, Connecticut (2001), III Bienal Iberoamericana de Lima (2002), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2003), Artangel, London (2005), the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany, and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois (2008). In 2010-2011 a retrospective called “A story of deception” was presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, at the Tate Modern, London and at the Wiels Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels. He was awarded at the Biennale of Contemporary Art Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2010) and the Award BlueOrange, Berlin (2004).
